Deceptive Elixir
Savannah stared at Jesse Howard, horrified that he was here, in this tropical vacation spot. He looked even harder and more ruthless in real life than heâd done in the photos and footage sheâd seen. Movement brought alive the cruelty in his face.
Wearing swimming trunks and a dark shirt, he was holding a phone and speaking forcefully into it as he strode by, with barely a glance at her.
âDestroy them,â she heard him say. âIf theyâve shown weakness, we take them down. Iâm not interested in a buyout anymore. Weâre going to start up in competition to them and they wonât have the strength to fight it. We can undercut them for a year, and theyâll be history.â
He paced on, his feet leaving deep prints in the wet sand as he veered away from the waves, heading for a large, rustic bar that she now saw, about fifty yards from the waterâs edge, surrounded by palm trees.
Savannah didnât want to be anywhere near him. She had a bad feeling about seeing him, sensing that trouble lay ahead. She turned in the other direction but saw only the beach, stretching endlessly away. It was getting dark now and clouds were gathering. A flash of lightning made the decision for her, and she hurried in the direction of the bar.
The wind was tugging at her hair, which had dried into tangled beach waves thanks to the salty water, and fluttering the skirt of her yellow sundress. Pushing open the door, she stepped into the bustle of the bar, hearing the thumping beat and percussion of salsa music.
Glancing around, she saw Jesse had joined a group of men, some in short-sleeved work shirts, others in swim gear, who were clustered around a table. They looked to be wrapping up a meeting and were laughing, relaxing, pushing their chairs back. Documents and folders were piled in the center of the table as if signaling an end to the work part of the evening and a start of the fun.
The lights dimmed.
Savannah moved over to the other side of the bar, glancing around, looking for a friendly face. Was Jacob here? She couldnât see him. Surely he would be here with her if she was on vacation? But there was no sign of him anywhere.
The barman gave her a flashing grin, teeth white in his darkly tanned face.
âGuaro Sour for you?â he asked.
Guaro? She was in Costa Rica, she realized.
âThanks,â she smiled. She put her wallet on the counter and watched while he made the drink, adding fresh lime wedges and sugar to the glass, stirring vigorously, adding a triple shot of guaro over crushed ice and finishing with a dash of soda. A slice of lime and a sprig of mint completed the drink which he pushed across the wooden counter with a flourish.
âYouâre not paying for that,â a harsh, grainy voice said from behind her at the same time that a hand closed on her bare shoulder.
She spun around.
Jesse Howard was standing behind her.
